2023 Bayliner Lineup

2023 Bayliner Element Series

What kind of boat is a Bayliner Element? – we get this question more often than not.

Simply put, Bayliner Elements are entry-level deck boats built on the patented M-hull.

Compared to traditional V-shaped hulls, the innovative M-hull is extremely stable, predictable, and offers an automotive-style driving experience.

Thanks to this enhanced stability, Bayliner Elements are safe and easy to operate even for beginner boaters.

Another hidden advantage of the M-hull is that it enables the boat to get on plane much easier, so it can be rigged with smaller motors. All of this means lower purchase prices and ongoing costs.

These boats are lightweight, easy to operate, and offer plenty of deck space. Most of today’s deck boats come with a “hot tub-style” seating design, and Bayliner Elements are no exception.

The largest models feature aft-facing seating, which is a game-changer for watersport lovers.

Under the seats, you will find a lot of storage space, which can accommodate plenty of gear.

The 2023 Bayliner Element line consists of five different models, including the M15, M17, E18, M19, and E21.

2023 Bayliner VR Series

The Bayliner VR line packs three traditional bowriders built on a standard V-shaped hull.

This series debuted in 2015, replacing the proven BR series including the 175 BR, 215 BR, and 235 BR.

Unlike their predecessors, the VR line is built exclusively with fiberglass without using any wood elements. This ensures higher durability and lower manufacturing costs.

The new VR hulls also became stronger and stiffer, plus their 20-degree transom deadrise can easily handle choppy water conditions.

The 2023 Bayliner VR line includes three different models, the VR4, which can carry 7 people while the midrange VR5 is rated for 9.

Marketed as the flagship Bayliner bowrider, the VR6 van carries 10 people with ease.

Each of these can be ordered with either outboard or sterndrive propulsion with a maximum engine power of 115-250hp.

The key specifications of the Bayliner VR series are as follows:

Bayliner VR4/VR4 OB Key Specs:

2023 Bayliner Trophy Series

The Bayliner Trophy series is designed with fishing adventures in mind. These boats feature a center console top deck and deep-V, or the Bayliner-exclusive M-hull depending on the model.

As the name suggests, the T18Bay and the T21Bay are engineered for calmer waters like bays, inlets, and inland waters.

These models are built on the M-hulls of the largest Elements, the E18 (18’2”) and the E21 (20’8”), but feature a center console deck design.

In contrast, the T20CC, T22CC, and T24CC enjoy deep-V hulls, which can handle offshore conditions. These boats are larger, heavier, and significantly more expensive than the Bay models.

The key features available on Bayliner Trophy boats include:

Bayliner T18Bay Key Specs:

Length: 18’2”

Width: 7’5”

People capacity: 6

Approx. Weight: 2,000 lbs.

Max horsepower: 115 HP

Fuel capacity: 33 gal.

Starting price: $29,320

Although Bayliners manufactured in the ‘80s had a very bad reputation, their quality, and design have improved a lot over the years. Therefore, the latest models are increasingly gaining in popularity, especially among beginner boaters.

10 Reasons Why Bayliners Don’t Have a the Good Reputation They Deserve

Contrary to popular belief, today’s Bayliners are solid boats that are widely popular among buyers.

But why do Bayliners still have a somewhat bad reputation?

Based on our research, the most common reasons why this brand is still considered a bad-name brand by some boaters are as follows:

Structural problems on vintage models

Engine issues of vintage boats

Smaller models and engine options in the latest US lineup

Simpler design

Lower quality materials

Fewer bells and whistles

Certain models are built in Mexico

Bayliners are built to fit a price point

Bayliner owners are mainly beginners

A lot of complaints due to their abundant presence

If you want to find out more about these issues, keep reading!

Why do Bayliners Have a Bad Reputation?

1. Structural Problems with Older Models

There’s no question that the main reason for Bayliner’s bad reputation is the various problems with vintage models.

In the past, Bayliner was a nice-sounding name in the boating market. But everything changed in the mid-’80s when the manufacturing capability of the factory could not keep up with market demands.

As a consequence, the quality of Bayliner boats began to decline.

Many models manufactured from the mid to late ‘80s suffered from various problems, and some of them were still around in the ‘90s.

One of the most common issues of Bayliners in that era was their thin hull material.

Compared to rival boats, the shell of these boats was significantly thinner, which translated to less stiffness and lower durability.

Another big mistake from the manufacturer was that they stored the boats too long in shrink wrap, which caused their wooden structures to rot.

In the late 1980s, Bayliner manufactured a lot of boats, many of them featuring a wooden structure with a fiberglass cover.

Due to their large production capacity, a lot of these boats were stored in shrink wrap for a long time.

In this non-ventilated cover, the wood floor under the fiberglass started to rot before the boat was sold.

Besides this issue, these boats came with poor sealing and fittings. As an example, the manufacturer didn’t use stainless staples for the upholstery. These poor-quality staples were prone to rusting and rotting in a short period of time.

It’s safe to say that these rotting issues were the first to result in the bad reputation that the brand suffered!

2. Engine Issues of Vintage Bayliners

Another complaint against older Bayliner boats was their unreliable Forza outboard motors and inadequate diesel inboard engines.

These motors became more prevalent on Bayliner boats after its parent company Brunswick acquired the Chrysler Outboard Motor Company.

Chrysler manufactured Forza outboards, which were known for having outdated technology, high maintenance, and very poor reliability.

Despite these well-known problems, Brunswick decided to rig many of their smaller boats with these motors.

While the smaller boats suffered from the unreliable Forza outboards, larger motor yachts became the test vessels for the outdated and low-powered diesel motor combinations.

Many of these tests resulted in extremely underpowered models, especially those that came with non-turbo diesel engines.

Since Brunswick didn’t want Bayliner to compete with the upper-level Sea-Ray, it reserved the best engines for the Sea-Ray brand. This was the reason why many vintage Bayliners were designed with poor power sources.

As one may expect, these unreliable and underpowered motors added another nail into the reputation of Bayliners.

The brand already had such a bad reputation that the parent company decided to rebrand Bayliner Yachts as Meridians in 2003.

3. Bayliner Markets Only Small Boats

Since Bayliner motor yachts were renamed as Meridian, the manufacturer has only been marketing small entry-level trailer boats under the Bayliner brand name.

Hence, Bayliners started to be considered a cheap, entry-level boat brand, so the marketplace became picky about these boats.

Despite this, the quality of Bayliners has been improving over the years.

The latest Bayliner lineup packs many great trailer boats of a quality that is light years from their outdated predecessors.

Regarding dimensions and capacities, the length of today’s Bayliners ranges from 15 to 24 feet and they can carry 5-12 people.

Many of them are built on the patented M-hull, which can be rigged with surprisingly small motors.

But note that these smaller motors don’t make these Bayliners underpowered. Thanks to their special hull design they can get on plane and cruise with less engine power, making these boats very economical to buy and run.

Sure, there are many larger boats in the competitors’ offerings, but as we’ve discussed Bayliner focuses on the entry-level segment.

This is why you can only find small boats in the Bayliner fleet!

4. Simpler Design

Let’s face it, Bayliners feature a simpler design than many competitor boats.

This is no surprise since the company doesn’t use well-known boat designers to design their models. Instead, Bayliners and their features are designed in-house.

This ensures lower production costs and a simpler manufacturing process.

5. Lower Quality Materials

Bayliners not only feature basic designs, but they also use lower-quality materials to keep manufacturing costs down.

This doesn’t mean that the latest Bayliners suffer from any structural problems, but their mats, upholstery, and fittings are definitely built with lower-quality materials.

On the other hand, the construction of Bayliners has significantly improved in the last few years.

Unlike their predecessors, the latest models come with a completely wood-free, all-composite construction.

Yes, you read correctly, these modern Bayliners don’t feature wooden structural elements anymore. No more degraded and rotten floors!

6. Fewer Features and Gadgets

If you take a closer look at the list of the standard and optional features of Bayliners, you will see that these boats come with fewer bells and whistles.

While Sea-Ray and other premium brands focus on delivering premium finishes and features, Bayliners are designed with minimalism in mind.

While it makes these boats less attractive for more demanding customers, fewer features translate to lower price tags.

What’s more, this means that there are fewer things that can go wrong on these boats.

7. Certain Bayliners are Built in Mexico

Where are Bayliners built? – we frequently get this question.

While many Bayliner boats are built in Tennessee and Washington, some others are manufactured in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, in Mexico.

Research shows that the majority of Americans prefer made-in-USA products, so Bayliners made outside the States fly under the radar for many customers.

8. Bayliners are Made to Fit a Price Point

Many entry-level boats are made to fit a price point, and Bayliners are no exception.

All things listed above, including the simpler design, lower quality materials, and fewer features all help the manufacturer to build some of the most affordable boats in their categories.

Due to their very low price tags, Bayliners suffer from a reputation as “budget” boats, which makes many people think that they are poor-quality products.

But they are wrong!

Today Bayliners are decent boats, but their customers must remain realistic. At the end of the day, they get what they pay for.

9. Bayliner Owners are Mainly Beginners

Since Bayliner boats are typically priced less than most of their competitors of the same size, they are frequently targeted by beginners.

And let’s face it, these inexperienced boaters often know nothing about their boats and their maintenance.

Many of them don’t know how to properly operate and maintain their boat, which translates to malfunctions and lower durability.

This is one of the main reasons why you hear many complaints about Bayliners.

10. A Lot of Complaints Due to an Abundant Presence

Last but not least, don’t forget that Bayliner is one of the best-selling boat brands in the US, and also has good brand recognition. So, when you hear a lot of complaints against these boats you should take into account that there are a lot of these boats out there.

A lot of boats mean many complaints but also many owners who have good experiences with these boats as well.

A lesser-known boat brand may get less criticism, which is not surprising if they only sell a couple of boats each year.

It’s the same with jet skis; if you do online research, most complaints are about Sea-Doos and Yamaha WaveRunners, while there are only a few about Kawasakis.

This is no accident since the majority of the jet skis in the US are sold by Yamaha and Sea-Doo, while Kawasaki has only a very small market share.

Conclusion – Are Bayliners Any Good?

Bayliners are still suffering from a bad historical reputation, since in the mid and late ‘80s many of these boats were built with poor-quality materials and stored improperly, causing rust and rot.

Small runabouts from this era featured wooden floors, which were covered by a fiberglass jacket.

Due to overproduction, many of these boats were stored in shrink wrap for a long time while their wooden floor started to rot. They were also rigged with unreliable Forza outboards which further tarnished Bayliners’ reputation.

What’s more, many larger motor yachts suffered from underpowered diesel engines, which lacked any turbocharger.

Due to these problems, Bayliner got a very bad reputation in the ’80s and ‘90s.

To make the situation better, Brunswick rebranded Bayliner motor yachts as Meridian and began to improve the quality of their smaller runabouts.

As a result of this process, today’s Bayliners are solid boats that come with decent quality. They feature wooden-free hulls and fresh designs including the patented M-hull. Bayliners are also exclusively rigged with Mercury outboards and MerCruiser sterndrive engines, which are known for their reliability.

Therefore, the reputation of Bayliners has skyrocketed.

On the other hand, don’t forget that Bayliners are still entry-level trailer boats that are made to fit a price point.

To keep design and manufacturing costs down, these “budget” boats come with simpler designs, fewer features, and lower quality materials than Sea-Rays or other upper-level boats.

But this does not necessarily mean that they are poor-quality boats!

Although the brand still has a somewhat bad reputation, the root of this is mainly malicious rumors and old horror stories about vintage models.

If you are considering buying a Bayliner, make sure that you get one of the latest models with a wooden-free hull structure and Mercury or MerCruiser engine.

The key is to keep your expectations realistic. You can have very good times boating on a Bayliner, which will cost you less than most competing models.

Keep in mind that these sites often miscategorize their listings, meaning you may need to use various terms and misspellings to get them. Create a list of associated words to the boat type you want and go through them individually. It’s a bit tedious but so worth it in the end.

6. Facebook Marketplace

Their customer service is quick to respond. They offer a live chat feature and will answer it quickly—high-quality service with outstanding delivery and the most reasonable prices.

9. PopYachts

In 2009, PopYachts was founded with the premise of fostering an active boat brokerage that provides sellers with things they’ve never had before – sell a boat without paying a commission. Pop, which stands for Paid On Performance, operates under the belief that boat owners should be able to sell their boats themselves. Boat brokers have a purpose, but many sales can occur without their assistance. Boat owners looking to sell should not have to pay to get their boats sold.

What makes Pop different is that it uses its own software system, which has helped to propel it to become the largest yacht and boat brokerage site. It used advanced marketing techniques and other methods to help them attain this goal in 2013. It sells more than 1,500 boats every year, leaving its competitors behind.

10. Yachtworld.com

One of the best places to find used boats is YachtWorld, with sellers worldwide. The site gives you a good idea of what the market is like, how boats are valued and priced, and what is available.

The website often lists more than 120,000 boats with a plethora of information and pictures for a prospective buyer. You can narrow your search by using the offered requirements:

New or Used

Location (region, state or country)

Price

Boat manufacturer

Boat type

Boat model

Boat year

Boat length

It’s a user-friendly website that includes news reports on selling and buying boats, featured vessels, and notices about the latest articles the site releases.

11. Forums

Several online forms are dedicated to the boating industry. Every section on these sites allows members to sell their boats and accessories. The key benefits these forums have to offer include information about the different models available, which can help you decide which one to purchase.

Conclusion

A day at the beach or lake can be a lot of fun when you choose to take out a boat. Of course, you have to know where to look to find one!

Each of these websites provides you with a chance to find the right yacht for your budget and enjoyment.

Are you wondering which is better, a Bayliner or a Sea-Ray?

In a nutshell, Bayliners are known for their lightweight hulls, great price-per-value ratio, and lower running costs. In contrast, Sea-Ray boats come with well-designed stable hulls, high-quality finishes, luxury features, as well as hefty price tags.

If you want to drill into the details and compare these brands head-to-head, you’ve come to the right place.

We at PowerSportsGuide have compiled all you need to know into this Bayliner vs. Sea-Ray comparison post!

Bayliner vs. Sea-Ray Comparison

Although both Bayliner and Sea-Ray are manufactured by Brunswick Corporation, these brands are targeted at completely different segments of the market.

If you are looking for a good analogy, think of Bayliners as Toyotas while Sea-Rays as equivalent to Lexus.

Both of these car brands are owned by the same parent company, but Lexus is built and marketed as their premium line.

Just like Toyotas, Bayliners are also designed to be sold in large quantities. Therefore, they come with lower quality and more affordable prices.

When it comes to Sea-Rays, they are engineered and marketed like luxury cars. Hence, they are made with higher quality materials, have more features, and more powerful engines.

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and talk about these two brands in detail!

Bayliner

Many boaters consider Bayliners to be poor quality boats, but they are wrong!

While the older models certainly had some issues, the quality of these boats has significantly improved over the years. Therefore, the latest models are far better than their vintage predecessors!

It’s safe to say that today’s boats are built to strict standards, and Bayliners are no exception.

However, it’s a fact that these boats come with very affordable price tags, which is reflected in their quality. This does not mean that Bayliners would have structural problems, but they are built from lower-quality materials and come with fewer convenience features.

Compared to Sea-Rays, Bayliners have a less appealing design and fewer aesthetic accessories. This makes them less stylish and not as desirable for many buyers.

Another key difference between these two brands is the thickness of their hulls.

Bayliners come with thinner hulls, which results in a lower weight. This comes in handy when it comes to hauling or launching the boat.

On the other hand, it makes these boats less stable on rough waters. Because of this, Bayliners are great for lakes, rivers, and small bays but are maybe not the best choice for open waters.

While Sea-Rays are known for their powerful engines, Bayliners are typically offered with smaller engine options.

Less engine power combined with a lightweight hull ensures better fuel economy, which is considered one of the biggest advantages of these vessels. Lower fuel consumption means a better fuel range and less time and money spent at the fuel dock.

If you are not looking for the highest quality and don’t plan to ride on open waters, you can’t go wrong with a Bayliner.

They are great “beginner boats” with simple features and low running costs.

Many boaters agree that Bayliner offers the best bang for the buck in the entry-level class, so it’s no surprise that you can find many best-selling boats in the Bayliner fleet. (For example, the Bayliner 175BR had been the best-selling boat in the world for more than a decade.)

If you are considering buying an older Bayliner, keep in mind that these boats are often owned by inexperienced boaters who don’t know how to handle and maintain them properly.

Although used Bayliners are often very inexpensive and easy to fix, only buy one if it’s in really good condition. Repairing an old and neglected boat is usually not worth the time spent.

Sea-Ray

When it comes to the Bayliner vs. Sea-Ray debate, many boaters claim that the latter represents a much higher quality.

This is no surprise since Sea-Rays are a much higher quality boat, which translates to a hefty price tag. Let’s face it, R&D costs a lot of money, just like superior materials and advanced features.

To design the best possible hulls and systems, Sea-Ray creates a lot of prototypes, which require a lot of resources. While many boaters aren’t looking for this level of quality and specialized features, others are happy to pay a higher price for better performance, handling, and technologies, not to mention the high-quality materials and far superior finishes!

If you want to take a closer look at the quality differences between a Bayliner and a Sea-Ray, you should compare older (15-20 years old) boats.

You will find that many of these Bayliners are fairly aged, while Sea-Rays of the same age are still in good shape. This boils down to better resale values as well.

Sea-Rays also have much thicker hulls, which makes them significantly heavier than Bayliners. While the extra weight isn’t beneficial when you trailer or launch the boat, it shows its shine on the waves.

The heavy hull sits deeper in the water, offering better handling and stability. This gives you a safer and more comfortable ride in rough water conditions.

For example, a Bayliner DX2000 weighs 2,810 pounds, while the weight of the Sea-Ray 220 Sundeck is a whopping 3,790 pounds.

To move the more robust hulls on the water, Sea-Rays typically house bigger engines. As a rule of thumb, in the 20-foot class, many Bayliners are sold with a V6 inboard engine, while Sea-Rays in this breed usually require a V8 for optimal performance.

The more displacement and cylinders also contribute to added weight and higher fuel consumption.

Prices?

As one might assume, Sea-Ray boats are much more expensive than Bayliners. Buyers often find that a Sea-Ray costs twice as much as a Bayliner in the same class!

Besides the higher initial costs, Sea-Rays have higher maintenance and running costs due to the higher prices of parts and a larger engine.

Takeaways – FAQs About the Sea-Ray vs. Bayliner Debate

As a takeaway, we’ve answered the most common questions on the topic!

Are Sea-Rays and Bayliners Made by the Same Company?

Both Sea-Ray and Bayliner boats are manufactured by the industry-giant Brunswick Corporation. Besides these brands, this large parent company owns many other well-known brands including Boston Whaler, Crestliner, HeyDay, Love, Lund, Mercury, and many others.

Why are Sea-Rays So Much Higher Priced than Bayliners?

The reason why Sea-Rays are much more expensive than Bayliners is that these boats represent a much higher quality.

Sea-Rays come with thicker, well-designed hulls and larger engines that offer excellent stability on rough waters.

They are also built from high-quality materials and utilize many innovative features. And as we know, superior finishes and craftsmanship don’t come cheap!

Which is Better: Sea-Ray or Bayliner?

Which is Better: Sea-Ray or Bayliner? – we get this question more often than not, and the answer is it depends. Although these boats are made by the same company, they are two completely different breeds. Bayliners are affordable entry-level boats that are designed with low price tags in mind, while Sea-Rays are known for their high-quality and excellent performance.

For a better comparison, we’ve compiled the key advantages of both brands:

Pros of Sea-Ray boats:

Better reputation

More R&D

Higher quality

Larger engines

More stylish

Higher durability

Better performance and stability

More features and accessories

Less price depreciation

Great on open waters

Pros of Bayliner:

Affordable price tags

Lower running and maintenance costs

Better fuel mileage

Simpler (fewer features to go wrong)

Lightweight

Best price/value ratio

Great for rivers and small lakes/bays

As a final word, only you can determine whether the quality and features of a Sea-Ray are worth the extra expense for you. Before you make your final decision it’s highly recommended that you take a closer look at and test drive both brands of boats.

This is our short Bayliner vs. Sea-Ray comparison, we hope you find it useful!

If you’re looking for new or used boats you can check with a yacht broker. These places have plenty of great options for you as well and people may post exclusively on these websites so you’ll want to check it out. Also, remember that boat brokers will generally have a list of people who they know are looking for something in particular so you may not even get a chance to see what’s available if you don’t talk to someone first.

5. Dealerships

Once again, you can find both new and used boats here. All you have to do is call them up or drive by and you can see what they have available. Some also have websites where you can get even more information before you even go to the dealership. Plus, they usually have a warranty or guarantee, even when you’re considering a used boat.

6. Boat Shows

Generally, the best place to find out about new boats that are coming onto the market is at a boat show. You don’t necessarily have to buy it there but you can at least see a lot of the new options and check out what you like and don’t like. You may not get as great of deals here, but you will still get to see a whole lot more than you would anywhere else.

7. Marinas

Marinas don’t always have boats available for sale, but you will still want to take a look at what’s there. You might find something that you’re really interested in and then you know what to look for. Or you might want to make an offer on a boat that’s not for sale.

Some marinas also have boards where owners can post their boat for sale and then you could find more information. Or you could post your own notice letting others at the marina know that you’re in the market and what you’re looking for. In the end, you’ll get a lot of information and have a good time too.

8. Boat Clubs

Local boat clubs are going to be similar to going to a marina where you’ll get to talk with owners and find out more about their boats and what might be for sale. You can also check out some of the popular options and decide if there’s something, in particular, you’re interested in. Joining a group of people who like similar boats to what you want is a great way to go.

9. Rental Services

Rental services are great because they only want to keep their boats around for a set amount of time. After a while, they want newer boats or they need upgraded features and then they might be interested in selling the old boats that they have. So, talk to them and see what might be available.

10. Auctions

If you have a little more time on your hands checking out an auction might be a good way to go. Sometimes you can get a great boat for a low price at auction, but make sure you’re aware of what a great price is so you don’t end up caught up in the moment and spending more than you should.

You might even be able to find charity boat auctions that will give proceeds to different charities that might be important to you.

Samples:

11. Boatyards

You might not think about a boatyard but these are a great place to go. You’ll find several that are abandoned and the yard doesn’t want them. As a result, they’re willing to sell those boats to you for a low price just to get them out. They might need a bit of work, but you’ll be able to get a great price and a great boat.

12. Bonus Tip: Just Google for Boats for Sale Near Me

Finally, you can always check out the internet. Get on Google and type in ’boats for sale near me’ or include your city and state. You might be surprised at what you find.

Anyone who is looking to get into owning their own boat dealership absolutely needs to know whether it’s going to make any money. After all, you don’t want to get into a new field or a new career and find yourself going nowhere fast. So, we’re going to take a look at whether or not boat dealerships are really profitable and what you need to do to make something from yours.

How Do Boat Dealers Make Money?

There are a few different ways that a boat dealer can make money but the best one is through financing the purchase of a boat. This allows them to get additional revenue through the interest rate on the loan that the customer gets.

Loan financing is one of the best ways for any type of dealership (including car and motorcycle dealerships) to make some money. The interest rates, as well as added fees, are often quite high and the dealership gets all of this money. Also, getting the customer to add on extra services, upgrades or accessories will help a dealer make more money as these usually have a higher markup on them.

How Much Do Boat Dealers Markup Boats?

There is no clear amount that boats are marked up by dealers as it depends on the dealer as well as the specific boat but the estimate is that they are marked up approximately 30%. It’s important to note that this markup also accounts for other costs to the dealer.

If you’re looking to purchase a boat it’s a good idea to offer less than the current posted price, as this includes a great deal of markup. Keep in mind that you should not offer 30% less, however, as the markup includes all of the dealer overhead for keeping that boat as well as keeping the rest of the dealership going. Overhead generally takes up 18-22% of the boat’s markup.

Is Owning a Boat Dealership Profitable?

Owning a boat dealership can be profitable but it takes a great deal of work and you will need to be good at making sales in order to earn money. On a boat sale, a dealer will generally earn between 8-12% profit over and above the costs of operation.

In some cases, you may be able to get as much as 17% profit on certain makes and models of boats, though this is not common. It also depends on the overall price that you sell the boat for and whether you’re getting financing charges as well.

Do Boat Dealers Negotiate the Price?

You absolutely can make deals and negotiate with boat dealers. In fact, much like going to a car dealership to purchase a new vehicle, it’s expected that you will negotiate and attempt to haggle the price that you see on the ‘sticker’ for the boat.

When you do deal remember that you want to offer something that is reasonable for both you and the dealer. They need to make some type of profit and you also want to get a good deal. Though markup can be as much as 30% that does not mean all that money goes directly to the dealer. There are other costs involved. Negotiations can also take the form of add-ons or upgrades rather than cutting the price.

How Much Does it Cost to Open a Boat Dealership?

If you’re looking to open a boat dealership you should know that it is going to cost quite a bit. Even a used boat warehouse would cost at least $50,000 to open. If you’re looking to purchase brand new boats you will most definitely pay more than this.

You’ll need to include the cost of the boats, your sales team, service team for maintaining the boats, overhead costs related to the building or property that you own/rent, insurance costs, and more. All of these mean that it will likely cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to open your own dealership and that will depend on where you open (state as well as locations within that state) and how large of a dealership you’re starting out with.

Is Selling Boats a Good Job?

If you are a good salesperson then selling boats can be a great job for you. Keep in mind that the only way selling boats can be good is if you’re able to convince people to purchase a boat and you’re able to negotiate a good price for yourself and them.

For people who are great at selling and who excel at negotiations, you can make quite a good living in any type of sales position. There are some boat sellers who can easily earn upwards of $60,000 per year. However, there are others who are able to earn only $24,000 or less per year. It’s important to be good at the job if you’re planning to make it your career.

Do You Need a License to Sell Boats?

Whether you need a license or not depends on what type of boats you are selling and where. Some states require a broker’s license in order to sell. Others do not. If you are selling only your own personal boats (not through a dealership) you generally do not need a license.

In some states, the only people who need licenses are those who wish to sell ships and yachts rather than smaller size boats for more average use. Be sure to check out the laws and regulations in your particular state if you’re looking to start your own dealership.

Conclusion

Starting a boat dealership is definitely not something that you want to do lightly. You want to make sure that you weigh out all of the pros and cons and that you are careful about where you’re starting and how quickly you’re jumping in. Keep in mind that boat dealerships can be expensive to start and there is no guarantee of the amount of profit that you will actually get.

But maybe you need a little bit of help to get you started in the right direction and to make sure you’re picking out something really fun.

What are Funny Names for a Boat?

We’ve also done the research and gathered some funny boat name ideas under one roof:

Aquatherapy

Baby Got Bass

Beach Leech

Beeracuda

Best of Times

Buoyonce

Buoys and Gills

Current Sea

Decked Out

Endless Summer

Error 404 Fish Not Found

Fish Magnet

Fish Tales

Fore Sail

Full of Ship

Grace

Gypsea

Hakuna Matata

High Time

In a Meeting

Indecent

Just a Splash

Kids Inheritance

Knot on Call

Last Dingy I’ll Own

Layover

Lega-sea

License to Chill

Liquid Limo

Lochness

Marlin Monroe

My 2nd Option

Now Who’s The Loser

Principal Interest

Reboot

Relentless

Rum Runner

Sea Biscuit

Sea Ya

She Got The House

Ship Happens

Tax Refund

Thanks Dad

The Codfather

Unsinkable

Wave Rider

Whatever

Whatever Floats Your Boat

Can Two Boats Have the Same Name?

Yes, much like kids or pets, boats can have separate names. The big thing is to ensure that they are all registered properly, getting different identification numbers from the proper regulatory bodies, it’s perfectly ok to have boats with the same name.

Keep in mind that if you have the same name for your boat as someone else in your area it could be confusing or difficult to keep them straight. This could cause some trouble if there’s ever a problem with one of the boats or it could be annoying if you’re trying to register for different events. You need to make sure that you have the proper regulations and identification numbers for your boat so you can always confirm the correct boat whenever there’s a need.

Is it OK to Rename a Boat?

There are no rules that keep you from renaming a boat. You can just strip the name off the boat and put a new name on. Personal boats aren’t commissioned like Naval ships so there is no reason to delay renaming a boat if you feel the need to do so.

Make sure that if you do rename your boat you register the boat with the new name. You will need to contact the registration organization and make sure that you change the name of the boat on all of your paperwork. Make sure you do this at your marina or anywhere that your boat is affiliated as well so you don’t lose out on your access. You want to get all of these things done right away to reduce your chances of problems.

How Do You Name a Boat After Someone?

This is another easy one to do. All you need is to pick somebody that you admire and emblazon them on your boat. Yes, it really is that easy. While it may raise questions as to why you chose a person it could lead to some good conversations.

You get to choose what you name your boat and that goes for more than just giving it a funny or unique name. If you want to name it after someone important to you (or someone who isn’t) that’s also entirely up to you. Your boat can have just about any name you want (though some names that are considered offensive may not be able to get through the registration process).

Why Do Boats Get Female Names?

Boats have always been considered feminine as a boat is considered a way to protect their crew on their journey across the seas. As mothers are traditionally ones that watch over their children this analogy has been applied to boats and other transportation vessels.

What this means is that you will often hear a boat referred to as ‘she’ or ‘her’ rather than as an ‘it’ or even ‘he.’ That’s not to say that you can’t name a boat after a male or that there is no other recourse but to refer to your boat as feminine. It’s truly up to you as the owner of your boat to do what you want when it comes to naming and referring to your boat. Just understand that not everyone will understand you.

Can You Name a Boat After a Man?

While this isn’t something that is traditional there are no actual rules as to who you name your boat after. Naval vessels do have men’s names attached, usually admirals or presidents, but you could always choose another famous man to name your boat after.

As with just about anything else, you get the right to name your boat how you want. If you want to give it a funny or unique name that’s fine. If you give it a feminine name that’s fine too. So why couldn’t you give your boat a masculine name if you want to? You can choose whatever fits your preference and get your boat registered.

Conclusion

When it comes down to it, there are plenty of different ways to name your boat. And you don’t have to get too creative if you want to (or you can choose to get really creative). The best thing that you can do is try some of the different boat name generators out there and see what names you come up with and start from there. One of those names might strike your fancy or you might get an idea after looking at some of them.

Is It Cheaper to Buy a Boat at a Boat Show?

Boat shows are great opportunities to view the best of the boat manufacturers’ features. Since they usually only show new vessels you’re not expecting to buy a boat that doesn’t lose value. While there will be show-only specials that manufacturers will run that usually include very special features you can’t get at a base dealership without a special order.

If you’re looking for an older model of a boat or you’re looking for a very basic version of a newer boat this may not be the best way to get that kind of boat. In fact, if you do find it these are not the type of boats that will have as many specials because this is the time that manufacturers are really trying to get people interested in their newest boats and the biggest and baddest options available.

Are Boat Shows the Best Time to Buy?

That depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a base model boat with few features it will likely not be a great time. But if you like one that is on the floor or you want some special add ons it could be a great time to dive in.

Take a look at what’s out there and what’s being offered at the show. And make sure you look at multiple exhibits before you decide to buy because there are plenty of different manufacturers and dealers there. You may find a great deal on a boat only to find something even better with a different dealer. So don’t jump on the first one that you see.

How Much Does It Cost to Go to the Boat Show?

This will depend on the size of your boat show. Smaller shows, usually in smaller markets or run by dealer conglomerates, may offer free tickets. Meanwhile larger shows may cost upwards of $100 especially if they have luxury offerings.

Because of this, a lot of people will attend a boat show. In fact, you’ll find a lot of people who are in the market for a new boat, but you’ll also find a lot of people who aren’t interested in buying but just want something fun to do. If you’re looking to buy a boat you’ll need to work around the people who are just browsing, but it can be a fun experience for everyone involved and you can learn a lot while you’re there.

Conclusion

Boat shows are a great place to go if you’re looking to learn more about boats. Whether you’re ready to buy right now or you’re still looking at all of the options, you’re going to find out a great deal, get to talk to some people who have plenty of knowledge and even check out some seminars and courses to make you a better boat owner. Even if you don’t currently own a boat you can find out a lot from this process and have a great time doing it.
