Yamaha SRX 120R Specs and Review [Video]

The Yamaha SRX 120R is a popular kid-sized snowmobile powered by a tiny 123cc, 4-stroke engine. Just like its sister, the Arctic Cat ZR120, and the rival Polaris Indy 120, this tiny Yamaha became instantly popular among the smallest riders.

If you are looking for a Yamaha SRX 120R review, you are in the right place. We at PowerSportsGuide have compiled the specs and all the key info about this sled under one roof!

Yamaha SRX 120R Review

At first glance, the Yamaha SRX 120R looks like a cute youth sled, but it’s not at all a toy!

Instead, it’s a miniaturized Yamaha snowmobile that handles like any full-sized model. However, its moderate performance made it a perfect choice for the smallest riders.

Yamaha only recommends this sled for responsible children who are at least 6 years old. Besides this age limit, children must be under adult supervision when riding the sled.

The power source of the SRX 120R snowmobile is an air-cooled, 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine that features a Mikuni BV18 carburetor. Thanks to this power mill, the top speed of the sled is a (limited) 8 mph.

Besides its smooth-running engine, other features are designed for easy operation as well.

This sled comes with a double-wishbone front suspension system with hydraulic shocks that offer a travel of 3 inches.

What’s more, the torsion spring rear suspension system not only offers a travel of 4.5 inches, but it is also adjustable in 3 different positions based on the height of the child. Therefore, parents can set the seat higher if needed, so the sled can grow with the kid!

Thanks to these advanced and well-designed suspension systems, the SXR 120R offers a comfortable ride even on rough surfaces.

This tiny sled is propelled by a 10″ x 68″ x 0.69″ Camso Cobra track for a great grip. To minimize counter-steering in the corners and maximize traction, this track has a custom lug set (0.69 in./17.5 mm high) but otherwise this track features the same construction as its full-sized brothers.

The small but well-padded seat is completed with a rear storage compartment.

Just like the seating position, the handlebar arrangement has also been designed with user-friendly handling in mind.

Regarding design, the SRX 120R definitely has some DNA from the flagship Sidewinder as well as the classic Yamaha blue and white color scheme.

Standard features include a visibility flag, padded handlebar, windshield, head and taillights, grip and thumb warmers, as well as an automatic drive chain tensioner.

For safety reasons, the sled comes with a tether switch, which automatically shuts off the engine and a “speed governor” that artificially limits engine performance.

Yamaha SRX 120R Governor Bypass

Many parents want to surprise their kids with some “extra power.” To achieve this, they simply bypass the speed governor on their SXR 120R by mounting a zip tie onto the spring on the throttle cable. But according to MidWestMini, this is not a good idea! Why?

First, this is a safety feature that is there for a good reason. Small children are often irresponsible, so 8 mph is more than fast enough for them on this tiny sled.

Also, this sled’s gearing and chain are designed for lower speeds, so they can’t handle the increased power in the long run.

The governor is intended to restrict the engine speed at about 3,000 RPM, so running it at a higher speed with a bypassed governor may end in excessive engine damage.
